      Braille Writing Frame

      Artifact Description:

This frame consists of a grooved metal bed, which contains ten grooves to the inch, and over which is fitted a brass guide punched with oblong holes. This perforated guide is attached to the grooved metal bed by hinges. The paper is placed between the frame and the grooved bed. The instrument for writing is a blunt awl, called a stylus, which carries before it a little cap of paper, thereby making, upon the under surface of the paper, dots arranged in the forms of the letters of the New York Point alphabet.
