Where the Blind Beat Their Handicap
Des Moines Sunday Register
October 8, 1961
Photo- Notched dial on stove above permits a blind housewife to set oven temperatures by feel. The woman operating the oven is also wearing a Braille watch, with a crystal that flips up so she can feel the hands and the raised dots marking the hours. At right above, Mrs. Hazel Ellis, 26, of Davenport, uses a teaspoon, bent like a dipper, while preparing a recipe. By placing cooking ingredients in wide-mouthed containers and then dipping them out, the blind avoid having to pour, which would likely result in some of the liquid's being spilled.
