With Braille You Can Build Anything

Save the Date for the 2018 Braille Challenge and Braille Literacy Day

Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Iowa Department for the Blind

(Snow Date will be Saturday, February 3, 2018)

The 2018 program, “With Braille You Can Build Anything,” is a Lego themed day
that includes the Regional Braille Challenge and also learning sessions and
activities for braille readers of all levels and their families.
Braille is an important tool for both students who are blind or who have low vision
and it is essential to independence, academic achievement and employment.
For our Master Braille Builders, the day will include the 2018 Regional Braille
Challenge where students compete in a series of 5 skills contests: Braille reading
and comprehension, speed and accuracy, spelling, proofreading and charts and
graphs. Levels for the Braille Challenge include: Apprentice, Freshman,
Sophomore, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Students are competing for a spot to
participate in the National Braille Challenge.

For our Braille Builders, those who are new and beginning Braille readers, the
day will focus on hands on activities to start students on their way to braille
literacy. No braille experience is required and is for all ages. Activities will
include: learning the braille code, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) activities and using braille to help us build all sorts of different things.
Sessions for parents, family members and siblings will also be held throughout
      the day.

Join us for a fun day of Braille!
