Orientation Center students explore alternate pumpkin carving techniques

Primary Tasks

    Secondary Tasks

Students of the Orientation Center carve and display their Halloween pumpkins with great camaraderie.

The afternoon of Tuesday, October 28 found the students of the Orientation Center getting ready for Halloween by exploring non-visual techniques for preparing, designing, and carving pumpkins. Three teams tackled the task of producing a unique Jack O' Lantern, all starting with the removal of the squishy, slimy, seedy material inside. From there a variety of methods of mapping out facial features on the surface of the pumpkins were employed, using push pins, string, the sense of touch, and much consultation amongst the team members. Everyone took a turn with the knife during the carving phase and now the three distinctive results are on display in the lobby of the Iowa Department for the Blind, ready for the big day.
