Biography

Shortly after Jennifer was diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome at 13, she was introduced to the DeafBlind community.  The experience brought many challenges and uncertainties for her and those around her.

Originally identifying culturally as Deaf, Jennifer later embraced her identity as DeafBlind—recognizing both her deafness and blindness as integral parts of who she is. This shift became clear after attending the Seabeck Retreat for DeafBlind adults in 2015, a transformative experience that helped her fully claim her DeafBlind identity.

A lifelong advocate, Jennifer is dedicated to supporting both Deaf and DeafBlind communities. She will share her personal journey and reflections during Iowa DeafBlind Awareness Week on Tuesday, June 26, 2025, at 11:30 a.m.

Jennifer's Motto:
“Until you embrace yourself, you will never know who you really are, and you won’t know what you are really capable of.”
