National Diabetes Month

Each November marks National Diabetes Month, a time to raise awareness about diabetes and its impact on millions of Americans. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when blood sugar (glucose) levels become too high. It currently affects about 38 million people in the United States, and roughly one in four of those individuals also experience diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of vision loss.

At the Iowa Department for the Blind, we recognize the significant impact diabetes can have on eye health and vision. We are committed to supporting all Iowans who are blind or have low vision in living independent and fulfilling lives.

World Diabetes Day

In addition to National Diabetes Month, we join the global community in recognizing World Diabetes Day, observed on Friday, November 14, with the theme of ‘well-being.’

Introducing Healthy Habits

Throughout November, our staff will share ideas for incorporating healthy habits and well-being into everyday routines. Living a healthy lifestyle plays an important role in managing diabetes, as it helps regulate blood sugar levels, supports heart health, and reduces the risk of serious complications.

This month we will be featuring:

  • An audiobook list from the Iowa Library for the Blind and Print Disabled
  • Insights on building meal plans that meet individual dietary needs
  • Tech tips on using an accessible fitness watch to track movement
  • A conversation with a blind dietitian about managing diabetes
