Flipping the Script on Aging: Celebrating Older Iowans with Vision Loss
This May, we’re proud to join the nationwide celebration of Older Americans Month with the theme: “Flip the Script on Aging.” At the Iowa Department for the Blind, we’re honoring this theme by highlighting the experiences and stories of older blind clients in the Independent Living Program throughout the month. Their stories show us that aging is not a limitation; it’s an opportunity for growth, independence, and connection.
Through our Independent Living Program, Iowans who are blind or have vision loss receive personalized, in-home or community-based training to help them stay independent. From learning about adaptive kitchen tools and medication management systems (to manage their medications), to how to use a long white cane or access audio books, our clients are finding new ways to thrive every day.
Follow us throughout May as we share photos and stories of older adults who are flipping the script on aging—taking on new hobbies, staying active, connecting with others, and redefining what it means to age with vision loss.
Join the celebration by posting your own stories or messages of support using #FlipTheScriptOnAging.
