Week 1 of LEAP launched with an engaging Empowerment and Self-Advocacy Workshop held on the Drake University campus. Students explored the campus while attending classes in various buildings, using travel and communication skills to stay on schedule.
Workshops covered key topics including self-advocacy, technology, self-defense, social navigation, and empowerment. Students also engaged in meaningful conversations with mentors and professionals across multiple fields. The week concluded with a luncheon, offering a chance to connect with program staff and university personnel.
During Week 2, students began preparing for their upcoming Work Experience Workshop with the Business Enterprise Program (BEP) through resume building, mock interviews, and an introductory overview of the program.
Mid-week, students had the opportunity to work on their outdoor cooking skills by preparing a cookout-style lunch. Students also attended the first Thrive Thursday presentation, where staff from the Science Center of Iowa led a hands-on STEM activity using three different accessible robots.
Additional outings included:
- A visit to the Botanical Center
- Eating out at local restaurants
- A creative multi-media art event in partnership with the Des Moines Art Center
