From August 12–16, 2025, the Iowa Department for the Blind’s Rehabilitation Teaching Team hosted a Super Community-Based Training (CBT) in Des Moines, with eight participants from the Vocational Rehabilitation and Independent Living programs.

The training featured a variety of engaging classes—including Home Management, Technology, Travel, and Braille—all designed to equip participants with essential skills to support their independent living and employment goals. At the end of each day, participants had the opportunity to choose a “student choice” class based on their interests.

The week concluded with a Saturday celebration, where family members were invited to enjoy a brunch prepared by participants during their Home Management class. Former Center students shared personal stories about how Center training impacted their lives and encouraged others to consider further training. At the end of the celebration, certificates of completion were presented to all the clients who participated in the Super CBT.

Here are a few testimonials about the Super-CBT experience:

  • “I feel like the whole experience was super positive and good overall. I expected it to be overwhelmingly frustrating and challenging, and it wasn't. I want to come back!”
  • “I feel like I'm accomplishing something each time, and how comfortable I am becoming each time I participate in CBT.”
  • “I’m so glad I came. I’m doing this to prepare for my future. I want to come back.”
