Meet Frank
Meet Frank Strong, a lifelong music lover from Council Bluffs who has turned his passion into a career spanning more than 25 years. Frank runs his own music production business, where he teaches others to play and performs at venues across Des Moines. You can often find him playing guitar and harmonica at retirement homes, festivals, and a downtown restaurant. In the spring, Frank’s music business also hosts an annual concert series at the Des Moines Botanical Garden, known as the Botanical Blues.
For Frank, music is more than just performance—it’s a connection. He loves working with people and sharing the joy that music brings. “It’s good for us to recreate and celebrate,” he shares.
Working with IDB
Frank’s journey with the Iowa Department for the Blind began shortly after high school. After meeting with Iowa Workforce Development, he was referred to IDB’s Vocational Rehabilitation program and connected with a counselor who helped him explore education and career options.
With IDB’s support, Frank earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Iowa and later a master’s degree in disability services from the University of San Francisco. Early on, many people encouraged him to pursue law, but over time, Frank realized that his true calling was in music.
“The counselors I’ve worked with have been very supportive of my focus and current activities,” Frank shared. “They haven’t tried to change my direction at all.” That encouragement allowed him to fully embrace his musical career while continuing to develop skills that support his independence.
Final Insights
These days, Frank is particularly proud of his progress in learning Braille. He studies daily and enjoys using his e-reader to keep learning new things. “I’m really excited to become more proficient in Braille,” he says. “It’s a very powerful tool for the blind.”
Frank’s story shows how following your passions—combined with the right support and resources—can lead to a fulfilling and independent life. With the help of IDB, he’s built a thriving business around what he loves most: sharing music with others.
