Meet London
Meet London Baker, who works on the maintenance team at the YMCA. London started his role in February and says his favorite part of the job is the people. “Everyone is friendly,” he shared, noting that even with vision loss, his coworkers support him and recognize the exceptional work he does. “I get compliments every day,” he added.
Working with IDB
London first learned about the Iowa Department for the Blind (IDB) at an eye appointment when his doctor explained that his vision was declining and recommended the program. Through IDB’s Vocational Rehabilitation services, he participated in braille, cane travel, and home management training.
During training, London worked closely with his counselor to set goals that mattered to him. Having spent his life working and caring for others, his goal was to continue supporting people—even with vision loss. IDB also connected him with THRIVE Supported Employment, who accompanied him to interviews and helped ensure employers understood his needs.
Today, London uses the skills he gained during training every day at his job. Braille helps him navigate labeled doors and cleaning supplies so he can work independently. He also uses his technology skills and the Lookout app on his phone—an important tool that supports him in his role at the YMCA.
Final Insights
Reflecting on his journey, London explained that before working with IDB, he felt scared and worried about what his future would look like. Now, he feels more confident than ever and puts himself out there. “With the skills I learned, I know I’ll be fine.”
