Aaron Fratrik

Meet Aaron Fratrik, a Client Coordinator at Talk to Me Technologies. Located in Cedar Falls, Talk to Me Technologies helps children and adults of all ages with communication differences due to diagnoses like autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, stroke, and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Aaron has been in his role for 18 months and says his favorite part of the job is working with families. He shares, “I find purpose in knowing that my work makes a positive difference in the disability community.”

Training at IDB

Aaron first learned about the Iowa Department for the Blind from his eye doctor in Minnesota, who recommended he reach out. Shortly after, Aaron applied for services and became a vocational rehabilitation client. He began with basic VR training before taking the next step and joining IDB’s Orientation Center. There, he learned skills that help him navigate everyday life, including cooking, technology, cane travel, woodshop, and braille. Technology training was especially critical—he gained confidence in utilizing screen readers and navigating phones, computers, and other assistive technology. These skills are now part of his daily workflow, allowing him to manage client communication and coordinate services.

During training, Aaron spent time with his counselor discussing his career goals. Through those conversations, he realized he wanted to work in the disability field and give back to the community that had welcomed him so warmly. Together, they built a plan, explored accommodations across different industries, and identified opportunities that aligned with his interests and strengths. That process eventually led Aaron to his current role at Talk to Me Technologies, a company whose mission resonates deeply with him.

Final Insights

Through IDB’s program, Aaron built confidence in his ability to live independently. After graduating, he moved into his own apartment and now navigates the Cedar Falls community using both paratransit and public transportation. Thanks to the real-world practice he gained at the Orientation Center, Aaron feels comfortable and capable of traveling anywhere—whether by bus, train, or plane. Reflecting on his journey, Aaron shared, “I would not be where I am without the services from IDB.”
