Overview

This May, we’re proud to celebrate Older Americans Month—a time to recognize the valuable contributions of older adults, highlight key trends in aging, and reaffirm a shared commitment to supporting health, dignity, and independence.

The 2026 theme, “Champion Your Health,” highlights prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their well-being by engaging in preventive care, making informed health decisions, advocating for their needs, and building habits that support long-term independence.

At the Iowa Department for the Blind

At IDB, this theme aligns closely with the work we do through our Independent Living (IL) Program, including services for Older Individuals who are Blind (OIB). Our rehabilitation teachers partner with blind and low-vision Iowans in their homes and communities to provide individualized, non-visual skills training that supports independence and confidence in daily life.

Services are tailored to each person’s goals and may include training in home management, assistive technology, braille and print-access strategies, money management, labeling household items, and travel using a long white cane.

Throughout Older Americans Month, we are excited to share client spotlights from our OIB program, highlighting the experiences, goals, and accomplishments of Iowans living independently with vision loss. Follow along as we celebrate health, resilience, independence, and growth!
