Meet Ky
Ky works as a Crisis Counselor, a role she has held for four years. Although she says the job can be challenging at times, she also finds it incredibly rewarding. Her favorite part of the job is connecting with people in crisis and helping them feel less alone.
Ky enjoys her career and looks forward to continuing to grow professionally. In the future, she plans to stay with her company while pursuing a master’s degree in social work.
Working with IDB
The Iowa Department for the Blind has been part of Ky’s journey as she worked toward her education and career goals. Before attending Luther College, where she earned her degree in Music, Ky attended the Orientation Center for the Blind from 2016 to 2017.
During her time at the Orientation Center, Ky developed skills in home management, braille, technology, and cane travel. She says the cane travel skills have been especially helpful to her today as a guide dog user.
In addition to her education, Ky gained valuable work experience while in college, including working at her school’s technology help desk. She enjoyed the position because it combined several things she loves: technology, helping people, and problem-solving.
Those experiences helped Ky build the skills and confidence she needed to pursue a career where she could continue helping others.
Final Insights
Today, Ky enjoys a career that allows her to connect with people and make a difference in their lives. She is grateful for the educational and vocational support she received from the Iowa Department for the Blind and for the skills she gained along the way.
As she looks ahead, Ky is excited to continue growing with her company, pursue further education, and keep doing work that she finds meaningful and fulfilling.
